Should I visit an Osteopath or Chiropractor?
It’s a question as old as the treatments themselves! As a Chiropractor it’s a question I am asked on a fairly regular basis. Now obviously I am biased! Of course I would choose and chiropractor every time, because chiropractic care changed my life and I LOVE IT!
The differences vary according to the Chiro/Osteo you choose to see. Treatment-wise Chiropractors tend to use more direct contact or short-lever adjustments to the spine where Osteopaths are more likely to use more long-lever or mobilisation techniques. Meaning that the Chiropractor is more likely to contact and adjust the specific segment that is mis-aligned and adjust it whereas the osteopath will take a more general approach massaging muscles and stretching tendons etc.
Philosophically the two differ quite a lot. Chiropractic focuses on the nervous system and its relationship with the spine and Osteopathy on the muscular system and its relationship with the skeleton.
Both Chiropractors and Osteopaths are registered Health Care Practitioners in Australia and both have undertaken five years of university study.
The Osteopathy Australia site says that Osteopathy “is a hands on approach to healthcare recognising the important link between the structures of your body & the way it works. Osteopaths focus on how your skeleton, joints, muscles, nerves and circulation work together to improve your health & well-being.”

The Chiropractors Association of Australia says “Chiropractors in Australia are a nationally registered and a regulated health care profession. Chiropractic is a drug and surgery free modality of treatment concerned with the diagnosis, management and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system; this includes the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. It is based on the teachings of Galen and Hippocrates and the premise that the body can respond appropriately to its environment provided that the nervous system is free of interference. This was further developed by Palmer which lead to a focus on the spinal column and its functioning. In summary, chiropractors focus on the detection and correction of aberrant spinal function and its subsequent effect on how the nervous system controls and coordinates the body in response to its environment.”

Chiropractors are licensed to take and read x-rays, Osteopaths are not.
