Winter 2007

Welcome to Body In Balance Welcome to the Body In Balance Newsletter

WINTER IS HERE!!!

The weather has cooled down dramatically, and it's so lovely we are experiencing the rain we were wishing for earlier in the year. While the rain is bringing the colour back to our parks and gardens, the combination of rain, wind and cooler weather brings about changes in our health.

The heating gets turned up at work and at home and this can play havoc with our immune system and any virus that may be in the air does not confine itself to one person. The cold and flu gets spread much more easily, and we are finding ourselves with even more strains of the flu to contend with these days.

IS YOUR WORKPLACE BEING PLAGUED BY SICK DAYS???

Yes, then it's time to hand out your chiropractor's business card.
The best way to ensure you stay well and do not miss work, is to keep regular appointments with your chiropractor. Staying with the schedule your chiropractor has set for you is extremely important to ensure you obtain optimal benefit from your adjustments.

If you have not had a check up of your nervous system lately please call the practice on (03) 9427 0006 to schedule an appointment. If you know of someone who might be on the verge of feeling sick send them in.
Chiropractors are more than just back specialists after all, they are doctors of the nervous system!!!

------------------
EVERY HUMAN BEING IS BETTER OFF WITHOUT SUBLUXATIONS!!!
------------------

ISN'T IT FUNNY????

It seems quite odd to us as back specialists that people will still go to their GP when they hurt their back!! People seem unsure of who to call when they are in pain with back or neck problems.

A recent survey according to the Medical Journal of Australia has shown that:  "60-80% of Australians will experience back pain at some stage in their lives, with 15-30% suffering back pain at any one time."
Back pain is the second most common reason (after respiratory complaints) for visiting the GP and is the leading musculoskeletal cause of health system spending in Australia.(1)

With so many people in pain, why do they not know who to go to? While many GP's understand the value of chiropractic care and will refer clients to a chiropractor, many doctors will still prescribe pain killers and anti-inflamatories. These will ease the pain, but pain can only be masked and numbed for so long before the body rejects our band-aid efforts. (Ask your chiropractor to explain the elastic band analogy.)

Chiropractors do not put anything into the body, they do not take anything out and it is the safest most natural way to look after back and neck pain for your entire family.

MEN'S HEALTH
AN IMPORTANT INVESTMENT FOR THE FUTURE

Father's Day is just around the bend, and that brings us the question of what should we buy our father??

A GIFT OF HEALTH....
may be the best present you could ever buy your father. We all want our family to be around forever, and we most certainly want the men in our lives to get the most out of their lives and to be as healthy as possible.

Chiropractic care is often overlooked by the general public as a way to maintain optimal health. People are often brought to our office, particularly male clients, when they are in dire need of relieving their pain. As we always say to our clients, only 10% of our nervous system is dedicated to sensing pain. So it really is not an adequate indicator of what is actually going on in one's body.

Why is it that men seem to think they are invincible?
They push and push themselves to the limit and do not value their health until it is taken from them. As our current information board this month points out, health should be at the top of our priority list. Without health we cannot appreciate the other things we value in life. Without our health we have nothing.

Are you a man who wants to make the most of his life, you value spending time with your loved ones, enjoy sports, relaxation and want to be functioning at your peak at work? Or, do you know a man in your life that who complains only when he is in absolute agony and yet still does nothing about it long term?

If so, call the practice on (03) 9427 0006 to speak with our Chiropractic Assistant and make an appointment.
If you are referring someone be sure to take a voucher before you leave so they can receive a special HALF PRICE Initial Consultation until the end of August.

Years of training and experience, plus sophisticated analysis techniques, enable your Doctor of Chiropractic to detect subluxations, but there are some simple things you can look for to find out if your spine is healthy.

Your heels wear out unevenly.  Can be due to uneven leg length or stress along with the length of the spine.

You can't you take a satisfying deep breath.  Breath, health, spinal health and energy are interrelated.

Your jaws "click".  This can be caused by neck or hip subluxations.

You have "cracked" your neck, back or other joints a lot.  Can be caused by areas of your spine that are locked or jammed.

You can't twist or turn your head or hips to either side easily and equally.  Reduced range of motion.

You are often fatigued.  An unbalanced spine drains your energy.

You have poor concentration. Subluxations affect brain health.

You have low resistance to disease.  Subluxations affect your neuroendocrine system which plays an important role in your resistance to disease and your ability to fight infection.

Your foot flares out when walking.  This test is easy as long as you don't cheat.  Merely look at your feet as you walk.  Do they both point forward, or does one foot appear to flare outward or inward?  Do both?  Foot flare may be a sign of a problem in the lower spine or hips, or meningeal stress in the upper neck or base of the brain.

One leg appears shorter than the other.  Keep your shoes on, and lie down.  Have someone stand behind you, look down at your feet, and gently push your heels toward your head.  Compare where the heels meet the shoes.  One foot (it's often the right) may appear anywhere from 1/8" to 1" shorter than the other.

You have poor posture.  Stand on two bathroom scales.  The weight distribution should be about the same over each foot.  If it is not, that's a good sign that your spine, hips or head are off-centre.

You have headaches, back aches, sore or tender spots in muscles or joints.  Common signs of subluxation.

You have a constant stressful feeling and tension especially in muscles and joints.  Muscles are affected by subluxations.

You feel stiffness in your back and neck.  Stiffness may be a sign of subluxation damage.

You just don't feel right; you are in general poor health.  Subluxations can affect your overall health.

Spinal Fact:
DID YOU KNOW?

Your back is one of the most important parts of your body.

It contains the SPINE, which supports the whole body and is in use 24 hours a day - even when you are asleep. The spine is made up of 33 small bones, called VERTEBRAE, which are stacked on top of one another.

The vertebrae are divided into five groups. At the top of the spine are seven cervical (neck) vertebrae, followed by twelve thoracic (chest) and five lumbar (lower back). Beneath these are another five vertebrae, fused together to form the sacrum, and the spine finishes with the coccyx (tail bone)."

TIPS FOR HEALTHY LIVING

As we all know, with any new regime of health care, one of the most important factors in assisting our health is by choosing foods that are good for us. Why not attempt to make the following easy recipe for a nice mid-week winter warmer?

TOMATO BEEF CURRY

Preparation Time: 15 minutes, Cooking Time: 110 minutes LOW FAT,  LOW GI and LOW CARBS

Ingredients (serves 6)

  • 1 tbs vegetable oil
  • 4 brown onions, halved, thinly sliced
  • 3cm-piece fresh ginger, peeled, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, peeled
  • 1 tbs coriander seeds
  • 1 tbs garam masala
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 2 tsp sea salt flakes
  • 1kg lean casserole beef, cut into 2cm pieces, excess fat removed
  • 4 large fresh green chillies, thickly sliced
  • 5 vine-ripened tomatoes, halved, thinly sliced lengthways
  • 1 green capsicum, quartered, deseeded, thinly sliced
  • Low-fat natural yoghurt, to serve
  • Shredded fresh continental parsley leaves, to serve
  • Steamed basmati rice, to serve

Method

  • Heat the oil in a large heavy-based saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes or until soft and golden brown.
  • Meanwhile, place the ginger, garlic, coriander, garam masala, turmeric and salt in a mortar and gently pound with a pestle until a smooth paste forms. Add to the onion and cook, stirring, for 1 minute or until aromatic. Add the beef, chilli and three-quarters of the tomato and stir to combine. Reduce heat to low and cook, covered, for 1 1/4 hours or until beef is tender.
  • Add the capsicum and remaining tomato to the beef mixture and cook, covered, for 15 minutes or until capsicum is tender.
  • Divide curry among serving bowls. Top with yoghurt and sprinkle with parsley. Serve with steamed basmati rice.

NICOLE'S ECO TIPS

To be concerned about our environment does not mean we have to wear hemp clothing or chain ourselves to trees. Caring for our planet, is as simple as being as considerate of it as you would with your own house.
Australia needs more "suburban hippies" as I call them, to lead the way in advancing our country into the 21st century. We need to show our politicians and the large companies that we want something done for the air we breathe the water we drink and for our children.

As most of us now know the environment plays an extremely large part in our lives. The rapid changes to our climate have started to affect our lifestyles especially in the warmer months when we were stricken with an ongoing drought.

However as the rain has started to fall it seems the water shortage has fallen slightly off our radars. We need to be even more careful during these colder, wetter months to be sure we are reducing our water usage in order to ensure we have enough to go around when the weather turns up the temperature.

So why not put a water tank in your backyard, put a timer in your shower set to 4-6 minutes and fill the washing machine, dishwasher or sink to full before starting it. You can also ask your council for information on installation of FREE water saving shower-heads to be installed on your property.

Planting a native garden, or using plants that are indigeneous to your area will ensure less water usage, will save you money and spending time in the garden will increase your feeling of wellbeing.

And always remember:

NEW MAGAZINE

We are now subscribing to a fantastic new magazine called "Pathways". It is an American chiropractic and family health magazine which is edited by Dr. Jeanne Ohm who is head of the Paediatrics Chiropractic Association in America.

They have fascinating articles for parents with newborns, toddlers and teens, providing a wealth of knowledge on subjects such as vaccinations, growing pains, pregnancy and a vast array of others.

We receive new copies each month so be sure to take one with you next time you visit. You can find them placed on the table in the hallway before you exit.

Wellness Workshops

There are numerous clients who have been attending the practice for some time now, and are receiving and living the benefits of chiropractic. While each consultation is tailored towards the individual, wider education on chiropractic can assist you further in your health goals.

The workshop is designed to inform potential, new and existing clients, about chiropractic it covers the recovery process, the time it takes to heal, what wellness means to us and how chiropractic can benefit you and your entire family.

The workshops are held at the practice Wednesday evening at 7:15pm every week and run for approximately 45minutes. We will also hold classes on Saturdays at 12 midday for those unable to attend the evening classes.

While we encourage all new clients to attend as part of their Initial phase of care and clients are most welcome to bring along a friend or family member. Any existing client is welcome to come along as a refresher of the benefits and bring that sceptical person who gets in your ear whenever you mention chiropractic.

Please call the practice today and speak with Nicole or Holly to book in, or let us know on your next visit.

We look forward to seeing you there!

NEW VITAMINS

Body in Balance practitioners will now be able to prescribe and sell practitioner strength Vitamins. These are brought to you from Bioceuticals. So please ask your practitioner for any assistance as they are much stronger than the over-the-counter vitamins available in stores.
